No breakthrough in attack on students

A day after two Carmel Convent students were robbed and their arms slashed with a blade outside their school in the highly secure Chanakyapuri area, the police have picked up three suspects.

One of the students, Tanvi Manchanda (16), was called to the local police station to identify the suspects on Wednesday. "The girl could not identify anyone. We are looking for the person and conducting raids," said Shankar Dash, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi).

The students have described the attacker as "lean, shabbily dressed" and with "flat features". Police said they were making sketches of the accused with the help of the description provided by the students.

Security has been beefed up around their school on Malcha Marg and the police are keeping an eye on "suspicious people". The other student, Ridhika Bhasin (17), had suffered 40 stitches after the attack.

Both commerce students, the girls had gone to an adjoining market to get some photocopies done when they saw that the usual shop was closed.

Police said they were also interrogating the photocopy shop employee and few other shopkeepers present at the scene of crime.

"We are asking the locals about the whereabouts of the accused, we suspect he lives somewhere in the vicinity," said the officer. The police have registered a case.
