Noida school holds back results

The mood at Somerville School, Noida, was sombre.

About 40 per cent students have scored horribly —some have even failed — in English even as their scores in other subjects were above 80 per cent.

The shocked school refused to declare its Class X results on Friday. “Something has gone seriously wrong with the assessment,” said Principal Arul Raj.

“How else can you explain a student scoring above 90 per cent in all subjects and just 25 per cent in English?”

In another glaring example of inconsistency, a student (not identified by the Principal) has scored 80 in Hindi, 98 in Mathematics, 90 in Science, 94 in Social Studies and a shocking 6 in English.

Eighty out of the 187 students of Somerville School, Noida, who appeared for the Class X Board examination this year, have found themselves in a similar situation.

“I have spoken with the CBSE regional officer (Allahabad) and he has asked for a week’s time to look into the matter,” said Raj. “But I have asked them to get back to me as early as Monday.”

“I would have accepted the result, had my child scored poorly in all subjects. But that is not the case. I really hope CBSE admits its mistake, otherwise my son’s career is ruined,” said a parent on the condition of anonymity.
