The Delhi high court on Friday slammed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation for failure to make adequate arrangements for parking of vehicles in the Chandni Chowk area set to witnesses bustling activity during the festival season.

A bench of justice S Ravindra Bhat and justice S Muralidhar was hearing a petition filed by a traders’ body of Chandni Chowk, Sarv Vyapar Mandal, which raised the issue.Its general secretary Sanjay Bhargava said the lack of parking facilities would cause inconvenience to lakhs of shoppers on the eve of Dussehra and Diwali celebrations.
The court has sought an explanation from the civic body on a complaint made by the traders’ body that a multi-level parking lot at Parade Ground is yet to become operational even after eight months of its inauguration.
The bench directed deputy commissioner of the civic body to give an explanation by October 16 as to why the parking lot has not been thrown open to the public. The court also sought a response from the corporation on a plea by the traders for a multi-level parking at Gandhi ground.
The civic body has to specify that by when it can commence the work.
