One of the most notorious criminals in northern India, Manoj Bakkarwala, has broken the police net once again and is on the run. This is despite the fact that the Delhi Police had been warned to take extra care while dealing with such criminals.
The 36-year-old Bakkarwala, who has more than 500 cases of motor vehicle theft, robbery and extortion lodged against him across more than seven states, managed to escape while injuring a Delhi Police sub inspector in the process.
“He was driving a Hyundai i20 car and was being chased by a team of the Crime Branch in east Delhi’s Karkari More area around Sunday midnight,” said a senior police officer.
The police team trailed Bakkarwala and his associates till the old ITO Bridge near the Delhi Secretariat before he was finally waylaid around 12:40am — but not for long.
As the police vehicle chasing him screeched to a halt in front on Sunday night, blocking his forward movement temporarily and giving the police team enough time to physically nab him, Bakkarwala swiftly backed-up, turned his front wheels sideways and zoomed-off fracturing an officer’s left hand.
The incident comes after Bakkarwala gave three Gurgaon Police officers the slip after being produced at the Saket Court on June 22. This was the master carjacker’s fourth escape after being arrested by the elite Special Cell of the Delhi Police in May 2009.
“The injured officer has been identified as SI Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, a 1986-batch officer. He was part of a team of four Crime Branch officers chasing Bakkarwala. He was attempting to get him to open the vehicle’s door when Bakkarwala zoomed off,” the officer said.
