The authority has issued Aadhaar numbers to around 220 million people across India of the 270 million people, who have enrolled.

Aadhaar number has been recognized as a valid proof of identity and address for many government schemes and would be central for direct cash transfer for 42 Central government schemes from January 2013.

To update one’s demographic details, the person will have to register on the UIDAI’s website with Aadhaar number.

The updation will happen only after the person logs in with the help of one-time passport send by UIDAI to the person’s registered mobile number and uploading of the relevant documents.

Those not having internet access will have to mail the changes in their demographic details along with relevant documents to the regional offices of UIDAI for updation in their records.

One would be able to make changes in his or her name, gender, date of birth, residential address or mobile number. For any changes in biometric details, the person will have to visit Aadhaar enrollment centre, the UIDAI said.

If the request is approved, the person would be able to download new Aadhaar letter from e-Aadhaar service link on the authority’s website, except in case of change in mobile number.

“The portal also enables the residents to check the status of their update requests,” the UIDAI said in a statement on Friday.

The authority has also set up permanent enrollment centers in 51 districts where direct cash transfers will start from January 2013.

“This will help residents to get Aadhaar number on demand for getting the benefit,” a UIDAI official said.
