NSUI sweeps DUSU polls, BJP exit

Bringing something to cheer about to the Congress in the Capital after its defeat in the civic polls, its students' wing on New Delhi swept the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections defeating Sangh Parivar-affiliated ABVP.

With the victory, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) maintained its winning streak in the polls, having won all four seats in 2005 and emerging victorious by a 3-1 margin last year.

NSUI's Amrita Bahri defeated Abhishek Tandon of ABVP by a margin of 4,334 votes to become the new President of the students' union, while Devraj Talan was elected Vice President, defeating ABVP's Suman Lata by 4,417 votes, Chief Election Officer Gurmeet Singh said.

Manish Choudhary emerged victorious on the post of General Secretary, defeating Renu of ABVP by 3,731 votes, while Khushboo Sharma defeated her nearest rival Manvendra Singh, again of ABVP, by 2,159 votes to be elected the new Joint Secretary.

The ABVP had won the vice president's post last year.

The elections were held as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on student's union polls, which do not permit students with academic arrears and less than 75 per cent attendance to contest.

The new rules led to disqualification of as many as 240 candidates, including the first preference candidates of the ABVP.
