Officials learn how to manage disasters

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) along with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and International Planned Parenthood Federation have launched a four-day training programme for officials.

At least 30 participants from 10 northern states will learn how to respond to chemical and industrial disasters.

NDMA vice-chairperson M Shashidhar Reddy will write a letter to Haryana chief minister to highlight the important of such programmes. Reddy asked the government to provide care to women during disasters. "At any time 5% of the population are pregnant women. We have to consider their needs while preparing disaster management plans in state and district levels," Reddy said.

NDMA has asked state governments to ensure that the programme reaches all sections of society. UNFPA will prepare a state-specific module to use it in future.
