Pak ‘spy’ was mobile repairer

The role of RPO officials is suspected in the alleged fraud, the police said. A Special Cell team is camping in Lucknow to gather more details.

Ali, a matriculate, came to India in 2005, via the Nepal border, by bus. After crossing into the Indian territory he reportedly went to Lucknow and stayed there for a year.

Ali used to pass on information through emails from cyber cafes in Naveen Shahdara in northeast Delhi. Special Cell teams are checking nearby cyber cafes to trace the emails.

In violation of passport norms, which requires a person to continuously stay for two years at a particular address, Ali was provided one within a year of staying in Lucknow, police said.

“During his stay in Lucknow he worked as a mobile phone repairer. This is when he made an Indian passport. We suspect the involvement of some agent who got the passport made in connivance with passport officials. A team is looking for the agent,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

Police said Ali procured details about key installations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

“It seems his details weren’t properly verified. The documents pertaining to address and bank details were forged but he still managed to get the passport,” the officer said.
