“Stress is something which can throw even a normal adult off balance. For children to stay composed, especially in India where there is lot of emphasis on doing well in exams, is not an easy task. It is essential that parents don’t overburden them with unnecessary expectations and help them set attainable goals,” says Geeta Mehrotra, a student counsellor.

Close to 12 lakh students will appear for Classes 10 and 12 boards this year. And surveys show that two in five students are stressed enough to lose appetite. “Family meals are a good way of diverting attention. Parents should plan at least one family meal, where you talk about things other than exams,” Mehrotra said.

Restricting internet, television, video games, phone calls or time out with friends is not good for the child, she said. A more practical approach is to allow them to take small breaks to do the things they enjoy.
