Education: M Sc in Chemistry from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Political career: Inducted in the AMU cabinet in 1972. Remained an executive in the UP Youth Congress while establishing his business. First contested Delhi assembly elections in 1993, hasn’t lost since. He was transport minister from 1998-2001. “I was the one to initiate the conversion of public transport to CNG,” he said. He is now a Congress secretary.

Family: His father was a criminal lawyer and mother was a family planning officer in UP. Wife Shaila Hashmi is the managing director in his travel agency. They have two sons and a daughter.

Cars: “I don’t have a car in my name, just an old Bajaj two-wheeler,” he said. But his wife has three cars —a Toyota Innova, a Maruti Esteem, which he drives, and a Maruti Zen.
