Plan panel for separate power grid in Capital

Planning commission says move is necessary to insure city against power failure, also suggests mapping of water bodies.

The Planning Commission has stated that they will support Delhi's demand for setting up a separate grid for the city on the lines of 'islanding' as existing in Mumbai.

"Islanding of vital installation of Delhi is necessary to insure against power failure. Planning Commission would definitely support it," said Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of Planning Commission.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Ahluwalia had detailed discussions on a number of issues related to the Capital in a meeting to decide the size of annual plan 2012-13 of Delhi.

Dikshit, while referring to the ongoing schemes and the new schemes announced in the budget 2012-13, stated that her government has earmarked around 65 per cent of allocation for social sector.

She referred to the new schemes such as Annshri Yojna, Kerosene Free Delhi and Delhi Swarojgar Yojana.

The size of annual plan 2012-13 of Delhi was approved at R15,862 crore including R862 crore of the public sector undertaking's plan. The Planning Commission also suggested the mapping of all water bodies in Delhi for their preservation and maintenance.
