Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condoled the passing away of noted academician Prof Amrik Singh, describing him as "one of our most distinguished educationists".

"He was one of my most dear friends and one for whom I had the highest regard and affection," the Prime Minister said in a condolence message, adding his demise was a "great personal loss for me".
Observing that he was a scholar with a deep understanding of culture and values, the Prime Minister said Singh was a teacher for more than 25 years and later became Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala.
Singh wrote extensively on higher education and published about a dozen books and his achievements were indeed remarkable, he said.
"Singh will be missed deeply by his friends and colleagues as a great educationist and a very fine human being," he added.
Amrik Singh, 89, passed away here yesterday after a brief illness.
