Delhi police on Wednesday began a crackdown on errant buses, prosecuting 181 such vehicles across the city for darkened panes and curtains on their windows.

The drive follows a direction from Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, asking the police to begin the crackdown immediately.

“We not only prosecuted buses with darkened panes and curtains, but also removed them,” Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said.

Traffic police also prosecuted 729 car owners for using dark films on panes.

Around 142 chartered buses across the city, used for picking and dropping off people at unauthorised stops, were prosecuted. Of them, 114 were impounded, leading to a sudden crunch on city’s roads.

Special teams of plainclothesmen have been formed with personnel from vigilance and police research group

cells to check buses at intersections.

“Taking out 114 buses must have caused inconvenience to many But we chose not to compromise with their safety and security,” a senior traffic police officer said.
