The bumpy rides on the city's roads will continue for a while. Thanks to the elections, no new projects can start under the head of the councillor, MLA or MP during this period. Then, the internal elections in the civic agency’s legislative wing have also brought work to a grinding halt.
The model code of conduct is in place across the country for the Lok Sabha elections in April and May, which has put many projects of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on hold. Work already in progress has also been affected as no work is being done in the civic agency, which is holding its internal elections.
Civic body officials said work was first affected due to the assembly elections in Delhi in November last year. Now, the poll conduct is in place for the general elections and the internal elections to the civic agency are also in progress.
The civic body was supposed to come up with an anti-littering policy to refrain people from dirtying the city by fining them. “Coming up with such a policy before the elections is not being taken too kindly by the legislative wing and hence the policy is yet to be tabled in the standing committee of the MCD,” said a senior civic body official.
Cement roads, instead of bitumen roads, will also have to wait. “New projects under the councillor’s head can’t start during the election period. Also, we are yet to get money from the Delhi government for the project. Once we get the money, we will start the process but it will happen only after the elections,” said Mahender Nagpal, chairman of the works committee of the MCD.

{{/usCountry}}Door-to-door garbage collection, which was to begin by March, has again been delayed. The project is waiting to be cleared by the MCD standing committee and its implementation would take another few months.
