Power supply hit as Monkey dies in substation

A monkey was electrocuted after it got trapped inside a substation of Delhi Transco near IP Extension on Saturday. The accident resulted in tripping of power supply to several areas for over an hour.

While Transco officials are not sure how it got inside the substation and got entangled in the live wires, it did send the security officials from the Central Industrial Security Force guarding the place into a tizzy.

"The monkey kept jumping around in the premises for close to an hour. We eventually cornered it but by then it was badly hurt and it died," said a senior Transco official.

As a result, supply to the areas connected to this 220 KV grid was affected. "We had asked the discom in South Delhi to reroute supply to other feeders without interruption."

However, areas like Maharani Bagh, New Friends Colony, Ashram, Lajpat Nagar and others faced short outages.

Some areas in Tilak Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, and Janakpuri, too, witnessed short outages but due to some local faults. The excessively humid day made sure power demand was high for a Saturday. At 4622 MW, it was over 300 MW less than Friday's all-time highest peak demand.

With the Met department forecasting the arrival of monsoon by Tuesday, the chances of an impending power crisis with demands overshooting the city's preparedness looks slim.
