According to sources, the prisoner, Naresh, was lodged in the high-risk ward of jail No. 8 for the past few months.

On Tuesday, Naresh — who had been charged under MCOCA — was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for a check-up by two Delhi Armed Police (DAP) personnel.

“Head constable Rajender Singh and constable Sumer Singh were asked to escort the undertrial prisoner for a medical check-up at the hospital. Around 10.30am, they left jail No. 8 with Naresh and reached the outpatient department. As the OPD staff were on strike, a doctor asked the police personnel to take Naresh back to the jail,” a police officer said.

The officer said the police personnel claimed that they were on their way back when Naresh requested be to allowed to urinate. In their statement, the duo said they took Naresh to a toilet abutting the DAP command room near jail No. 2.

A case under Sections 223 (escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant) and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.
