“What’s the difference between the old testament and the new testament?” “What do you mean by confirmation?”
These were some of the questions that the candidates appearing for the interviews at St. Stephen’s College had to face.
If those aspiring for a seat in the college thought that just knowing their Literature, Economics or Mathematics was enough to impress the interviewers, they were wrong. Those who applied through the Church of North India quota had to answer a volley of questions about their religion, besides replying to subject-related queries.
“I was quite unprepared and had no idea I would have to face questions about Christianity. I don’t think I could impress them much,” said Elizabeth Mathew, a candidate who appeared for the interview to secure a seat in Economics (Honours).
But then there were others who felt quite at home answering the questions. “It was easy. I was just asked to recite some verses from the Bible,” said Sweta Mariam George who reads the Bible everyday.
Besides these, the general category students also had some interesting questions to tackle. Nandini Bakshi (name changed), who appeared for the English (Honours) interview, was asked to name the latest piece of Literature she had read. “Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts,” she said. But the answer did not inspire much enthusiasm, so she had to fall on a classic. “Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.” Noticing the visible change in their expressions, she was convinced she hit the jackpot. So, the next question followed. “Do you think the novel was about love or money?” But clearly, the students were ready to take it all to make it to the ‘best college in the country.’

Though my first choice is Economics, I may take up even Physics, if I am selected. It is considered a privilege to study here,” said a candidate from Kochi who did not wish to be named.
