Rein in menace of illegal licences: Court to govt

A Delhi court on Monday sought a reply from the secretary, Department of Unique Identification Number (UIN), for developing a co-ordination system between government departments to counter the growing menace of illegal driving licences.

Citing persons using multiple driving licenses, Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) Judge Swarana Kanta Sharma said, “(A) copy of this order and (the) previous order be sent to the secretary of the department, Unique Identification Number, for the next date of hearing, who will file their response and compliance then.”

Among the five senior government officers who have been summoned by the court are secretaries of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and secretary, Delhi government's transport department.

Others who have been summoned by Sharma included two deputy commissioners of Delhi police. The court's order came in the wake of a case in which a Blueline driver continued to be employed, even after the cancellation of his licence.

The defect was detected when the driver committed another fatal accident in 2006.
