Revamp of NRHM to lessen load of AIIMS: Azad

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the government has initiated the revamp of the rural health system to lessen the load of AIIMS, which has been burdened with routine cases while it should have been dealing with more specialised ones.

"The government has initiated the revamp of the rural health system in the country and the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) aims to strengthen medical facilities at the district and local level up to the sub-centres located in remote village areas, by 2012.

".....This along with establishment of 8 AIIMS-like institutes and upgradation of 19 medical colleges all over the country will relieve AIIMS of much of its routine normal cases and will enable it to become a perfect referral hospital not only for the country but for the entire world," he said on the occasion of the 54th Institute Day of AIIMS.

Azad said doctors and faculty of AIIMS should not leave the premier institution for money.

"As a health minister, both private and public sector are the same for me but as the President of AIIMS I will ask the doctors not to leave," he said.
