The Delhi government's revenue department has received a number of complaints regarding some parents submitting fake income certificates to become eligible for a seat under the economically weaker section (EWS) category.

The department has now decided to verify all income certificates issued by it between November and January. The decision was taken after a man was caught giving incorrect information while getting his income certificate made.

"We received an application from a Vikaspuri resident. He wanted an income certificate that says his salary is R5,000 per month. On verification, we found that he owned three showrooms in west Delhi," said a senior Delhi government official.

The man's application was rejected. It also prompted the department to start a verification drive of income certificates issued by it for nursery admissions. Officials said if any discrepancy is found, the admission of the student will be cancelled.

"Schools generally directly send the certificates to the authorities concerned to check if they are genuine. But we have decided to check the authenticity ourselves," said a senior Delhi government official.

"To ensure transparency, certificates will be checked by an officer of a different district," added the official. There are more than 4,200 schools in the city.

"All the details given in the income certificate will be uploaded under a uniform pattern," added the official. Criminal action will be taken against parents who have forged certificates.
