Sale, purchase of property in unauthorised colonies okayed

With an eye on this year’s assembly elections, the Delhi government on Friday issued an order allowing the sale and purchase of property in 312 unauthorised colonies that are on private land and were regularised last year.

The government claimed this order would benefit lakhs of people in unauthorised colonies such as Pandav Nagar in east Delhi; Sangam Vihar and Gautam Nagar in south; Subhash Park Extension and Vikas Vihar in west’s Uttam Nagar; Gaffar Manzil Extension in southeast’s Jamia Nagar; and Prem Nagar in Najafgarh, among others.

“The lieutenant governor had approved the sale and purchase of property in such colonies earlier this year, but we had to go through the procedural aspects. All the sub-registrars have now been given directions to allow sale and purchase with immediate effect,” said Dharam Pal, the government’s revenue secretary, while issuing the order.

But officials said that people are going to find the actual trade of property difficult because of the conditions the government has set. For instance, the property’s ownership has to be clearly established — a formidable task as most of these properties were registered through the general power of attorney.
