Sales sluggish at form counters

DU blames the sluggish sales on a blockade enforced in the city and its suburbs by the Gujjar community.

Delhi University sold lower-than expected college admission forms on Monday and the university blamed the sluggish sales on a blockade enforced in the city and its suburbs by the Gujjar community.

Only 17,322 common pre-admission forms, as they are called, were sold against over 32,000 forms, the sale figure on the first day, or Friday University officials said less number of students from the suburbs turned up to buy forms after the Gujjar community, demanding that it be recognised as Scheduled Tribes, enforced a blockade in the city and its suburbs. "We were expecting more sales on Monday after the weekend."

"Very few students turned up to buy forms at centres like Acharya Narendra Dev College and PGDAV College that are located near protest flashpoints. Some of the colleges were badly affected because of the bandh and disturbances," said S.K. Vij, DU, dean students' welfare.

As usual, Kirorimal College in North Campus sold the maximum number of forms: 2,400. Only 205 and 495 forms were sold at Acharya Narendra Dev and PGDAV on Monday In south campus, the highest number of forms were sold by the deputy dean students' welfare's office - 1,478 forms were sold here.
