SBI examining fake Rs 2,000 notes with ‘Children’s Bank of India’ seal

The State Bank of India (SBI) said on Wednesday it is examining all currency notes at ATMs after fake Rs 2,000 banknotes were dispensed by one of its ATMs in south Delhi.

The bank, in a statement, said it suspected foul play and investigations were underway.

The bank held an employee of a logistics and cash management company liable for the bogus notes dispensed, police said on Wednesday.

Delhi Police registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust.

The matter came to light on February 6 when notes dispensed read ‘Children Bank of India’ in place of Reserve Bank of India and ‘Guaranteed by the Children’s Government’ in place of Guaranteed by the Central Government. ‘Churan lable’ in place of the latent image and a fake ‘PK’ logo instead of the bank’s seal, were among some of the other obvious deviations on the note.

At the time, police registered a case of cheating, manufacturing documents resembling currency notes and using forged or counterfeit notes.

On Wednesday, a Delhi sub-inspector also fell prey to the fake notes while trying to check the veracity of a similar complaint.

SBI accounts for more than a fifth of the country’s banking assets.
