SC to hear plea seeking CBI probe tomorrow

The Supreme Court would hear a petition filed by Archbishop of Cuttack seeking a CBI probe into the violence against Christians in Orissa.

The Supreme Court would hear on Wednesday a petition filed by Archbishop of Cuttack seeking a CBI probe into the violence against Christians in Orissa.

The matter was mentioned on Tuesday before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, which agreed to give it an urgent hearing.

The Archbishop also sought a direction that the NHRC be asked to conduct an inquiry to find out the organisation behind the Kandhamal violence.

The petitioner claimed that the Rapid Action Force has been deployed only in urban areas and it has to be moved to the rural areas which have borne the maximum brunt of the unrest.

The petition also sought a compensation of Rs four lakh each for those whose houses were destroyed in the violence.
