For those who haven’t done too well in Class XII, Jamia Millia Islamia could be the answer. This university has an evaluative system of admissions and this process, based on tests, creates hope for aspirants who failed to score high marks in the board examinations.

Jamia offers 222 diploma, undergraduate, post-graduate, M Phil and Ph D. courses. Admission to all the courses is through a written test (85%) followed by an interview (15%).

“Instead of cut-off percentages, Jamia prefers evaluating a student’s merit through a written test prepared by Jamia’s own faculty,” said spokeswoman Rakshanda Jalil. “Such a system of evaluation enables the University to allow a level playing field and, in a way, also gives another chance to students who may not stand a chance in colleges which follow the “cut-off” procedure,” she added.

Students are expected to have qualifying marks in their courses to be able to sit for the written test. Authorities say they have deliberately been kept these marks low, so that students can be tested more on the basis of their potential. For most courses, the minimum required percentages range between 50-55 per cent. “In this season of hype and hysteria generated by the dreaded Board Exam results, Jamia offers a kinder and gentler system of admissions to various degree courses,” Jalil said.
