SDMC plans to use treated water for parks

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has hit upon the idea of recycling sewage for use in its parks, so that clean water can be saved for drinking purposes at a time the pall of a water crunch hangs over the city.

The corporation, according to its plan, will set up recycling pumps in the biggest of its parks. The pumps will draw water from the nearest sewers and treat it.

The project is estimated to cost between R10 lakh and R12 lakh for every recycling unit. The SDMC will discuss the proposal at the upcoming House meeting.

Leader of the House, Subhash Arya, said the proposal would go a long way in saving water as well as raising the water table of the parks. A similar proposal was approved by the House in 2011 but the project could not take off.

The SDMC will identify the parks that are located close to sewers. The sludge from the sewers will be diverted to the parks using pipes and stored in a pit dug in a corner of the park. The processing unit set up in the same area will recycle
the sewage by treating it
chemically.
