Shashi Shekhar, who hanged himself on Friday, was a shy and reserved scholar who chose to end his life nine months after being honoured for displaying unmatched academic prowess.

Police said Shekhar’s cryptic suicide note had two sides to it: a requiem lamenting a broken dream and his admission that he felt it was akin to the ‘story of his (own) life’.

“He had everything going for him — his parents flew down to see him receive a gold medal for topping each year of his graduation on our Founder’s Day this February. He was a poet and very active in cultural activities,” said Nafis, a student.

According to police sources, Shekhar was romantically involved with a co-student who is pursuing her second year in Hindi Literature at the undergraduate level. She is being questioned.
“He was so reserved and kept to himself so much that he neither had many friends nor enemies,” claimed Anshul, another student.
