As a part of the ongoing Safe In The City campaign by HT City, a free self-defence workshop was organised at Leisure Valley Park in Sector 29, Gurgaon, over the weekend. Self-defence trainers from Fitcomb conducted the one-hour long workshop, which saw participation from morning walkers and joggers.

The workshop focused on developing situational awareness while walking on the road and getting to know one’s strengths to effectively combat an attack. “If someone bigger than you tries to lift or pull you, just bend your body forward or sit on the floor to increase your surface area, making it difficult for him to carry you away,” says Jaipreet Joshi, chief instructor, Fitcomb.

The trainers focused on techniques like using the bony part of the hand to hit an assailant, arresting the attacker’s hand or weapon so he cannot charge it, and learning to release one’s wrist from the attacker’s grab. “If an attacker is trying to pull you by the arm, instead of resisting, catapult your body towards him and push the opponent, combining his own force to your arsenal,” says Arunima Sinha, a trainer.

“I often get scared if someone tries to snatch my chain or grab me from behind. Doing the practice drill with the instructor makes me feel more confident to walk on the road now,” says Deepika Chugh, a teacher. “Folding the thumb so that the bony part of the hand protrudes towards the outside is very effective. Hitting an assailant with the bony part of your hand is better than a palm slap,” says Sonia Arora, a corporate manager.
