Sexual abuse at AIIMS

A senior resident doctor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) allegedly assaulted an eight-year-old patient sexually in the hospital a day after he was operated upon.

“The victim, a resident of northeast Delhi, was admitted to the neurosurgery ward for a brain tumour operation on January 18,” said a senior doctor at AIIMS on condition of anonymity.

The accused doctor is a final-year medical student who was on night duty at the Intensive Care Unit of the neurosurgery department.The AIIMS administration has forwarded a complaint lodged by the victim’s father to the institute’s Committee for Addressing Complaints of Sexual Harassment.

“After sexually assaulting my son, he (doctor) threatened him with dire consequences and said he would not be discharged if he mentioned the ill-treatment to anyone. My son was very afraid but confided in his mother the next day – on the 24th of January,” the complaint said.

The AIIMS administration responded to the father’s complaint by stating, “We are in receipt of your complaint against a senior resident doctor from the department of neurosurgery regarding forcing your son to indulge in a sexual act during his admission. Since the complaint is of a very serious nature, we have forwarded it to our committee for investigation.”

Attempts to reach the family proved futile as the mobile phone number provided by them to AIIMS was switched off and their house was locked.
