Three senior officers in the rank of Vice Admirals have been selected for awarding the Param Visisht Seva Medal (PVSM).
Petty Officer Chandrasekar's name was among the 38 naval and 62 IAF personnel included in the list of Presidential awards announced on the eve of Republic Day.
He lost his life while rescuing a wounded buddy even as he returned offensive fire and killing a terrorist during a battle, a Defence Ministry press release said.
The list of awardees included three Nausena medals (Gallantry) to Lt Vikas Dahiya, Leading Seaman Yaimachoul Singh and Leading Seaman Jaidev, all who were deployed in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Among other naval awards were three PVSM, seven Ati Vishist Seva Medals (AVSMs), eight Nausena Medals (Devotion to Duty) and 16 Vishist Seva Medals.
The three PVSM awardees were Western Naval Commander Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bashin, Southern Naval Commander Vice Admiral K N Sushil and former Chief of Material Vice Admiral (Retired) Dilip Deshpande.
