Sheila on Himachal election duty

The Congress on Tuesday appointed Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit as chairperson of the screening committee for the upcoming assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh. The committee will recommended the shortlisted candidates to the central election committee headed by party president Sonia Gandhi.

Dikshit's appointment to the screening committee came within few hours of her meeting with Gandhi. Sources said her appointment has also laid to rest the speculations that Dikshit may be offered a berth in the Union cabinet in the next cabinet expansion.

Dikshit had told reporters in the afternoon that her meeting with Gandhi was routine. Sources confirmed that the party leadership is happy with the Delhi government and it does not want to disturb the arrangement. "Assembly polls are due in Delhi next year and this is not the time for leadership change," said a senior Congress leader.
