Snatchers shoot in air to escape after failed East Delhi bid
In yet another case of snatching in East Delhi, two motorcycle-borne men tried to snatch a gold chain from a housewife and opened fire in air while escaping around 1.45 p.m. on Sunday, police said.
Anju Sethi was on her way home from a metro station on Sunday afternoon when she was attacked outside Mayur Vihar Phase-I metro station after she had boarded a rickshaw.
“The victim told us the two were following her since the time she boarded the rickshaw,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The victim, however, pulled back and the chain snapped.
A part of the chain fell on the rickshaw. Seeing this, the victim started screaming for help.
“Hearing a woman on a rickshaw shout for help, some pedestrians were alerted and they tried to catch the young bikers,” the officer said.
“However, the assailants took out country-made pistols and fired two rounds in the air to make their way out of the area. No one was injured in the firing,” he added.
The police said a few eyewitnesses even managed to note the registration number of the motorcycle and later reported it to the police.
The police on their part set up checkpoints and also alerted the neighbouring police stations.
They added that till late evening no one had been caught even after extensive checks.
The police was informed of the incident around 2 p.m. and the victim was taken to a police station where her statement was recorded.
According to police, the assailants were wearing helmets and that they were in the process of identifying them.
“We are after them. They will be arrested soon,” added the officer.
A case has been registered at Pandav Nagar police station and an investigation is on.
