South Campus police station gets its 1st complaint

A newly inaugurated police post, manned primarily by women and purportedly established to make female students studying and staying in the vicinity of South Campus feel relatively safer, received the unlikeliest of complaints from a 48-year-old man hours after it got the ‘go’ signal.

However, the predominantly women staff of officers posted at the modest South Campus police post on the notorious Benito Juarez Marg weren’t the only ones who took Ram Lagan Mishra’s visit with a pinch of salt.

“He was quite taken aback, actually. Since he was our first complainant, instead of getting right down to business, the officers sat him down, brought him some refreshment and presented him a bouquet of roses as he happened to be our first complainant,” said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).

An MTNL employee who was executing some maintenance work in the area, Mishra, by reporting the loss of his ID card and being issued a non-cognisable report in return, became the first complainant at the first police outpost in the heart of an area that has witnessed some of the most ghastly crimes against women in the past.

“The nature of the first complaint is encouraging, to say the least. The idea was to expand our presence in the said area for complainants of all hues and complaints of all kinds. It will soon be equipped with a complaint-cum-suggestion box, where either of the two can be received if the complainant wishes to remain anonymous,” DCP Sharma added.
