South campus security headed south

"It is absolutely shocking and disconcerting, to say the least. I cannot believe she is gone. How could they do it to her?" said a very disturbed Bhavna Shray, a student of Ram Lal Anand College, speaking about 20-year-old Radhika Tanwar, who was murdered on Tuesday.

"My parents, who are from south Delhi, are very concerned about my security. Imagine the state of those students who come from far-off places. Their parents may think twice about sending them so far to study, now," she added.

With hardly any transportation available for students of Ram Lal Anand College, Motilal Nehru College, South Campus and Venkateshwara College, security is a major issue.

Both Motilal Nehru College and Ram Lal Anand College have evening sections and female students often find it difficult to walk safely after dusk.

The stretch houses five colleges with around 20,000 students and approximately 5,000 staff members.

"There is such lawlessness that it seems anyone can get away with anything. We have learnt to live with eve-teasing and brash behaviour but today's incident has left us shocked," said Anju Locchain, a student of Motilal Nehru College.

The university has also deployed cycle-bound security personnel and is planning to deploy more buses soon.

"The university has always tried to ensure the safety and security of the students,” said Umesh Rai, director, South Campus.

“Two new Delhi Transport Corporation buses will begin plying in a month's time from the Jor Bagh metro station and will connect all South Campus colleges," Rai added.
