The tripping led to overloading of the second circuit between Gwalior and Agra.

Power department officials said power supply to the entire city could have been disrupted had the Delhi Transco limited not managed to avert a grid failure.

“The Agra-Gwalior Circuit- I tripped at 1:51am, putting further pressure on the second circuit between Gwalior and Agra. The tripping of this circuit could have resulted in the collapse of the entire northern grid as it had happened on July 30 and 31 in 2012. We had to carry out immediate load shedding to the tune of 500 MW,” said a senior power department official.

“Though Delhi had surplus power at that time and was drawing 50-60 MW less than the allocated quantum from the grid, power supply was disrupted in many areas,” the official added.

“The affected supply was normalised by 3.45am. The peak load met during the last 24 hours was 5077 MW,” added the official.

Several parts in the city faced power cuts once again on Tuesday due to shortage of power supply in the northern grid.

On Tuesday too, the northern grid faced a shortage of 3,000 MW of which 50-250 MW of Delhi’s share was affected.

Transformers on standby
To ensure west Delhi does not face power cuts, it has been decided to keep additional mobile transformers on standby for Dayalsar road in Uttam Nagar. Also, additional transformers will be placed at M block in Uttam Nagar.

A meeting was chaired by Delhi power minister Haroon Yusuf to discuss the power situation of west Delhi. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the power department and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL).
