Speaker expels BJP MLAs for three days

Twenty-four MLAs of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were expelled for three days after they resorted to sloganeering and disrupted the House for the third consecutive day in the ongoing monsoon session of Delhi Assembly on Thursday.

The MLAs blew conches and did not allow the Speaker to begin the question hour, forcing him to call the marshals to whisk the members away.

Some of the members wore masks of chief minister Sheila Dikshit, trooped to the well of the House and blew conches for almost five minutes, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for 20 minutes.

After a hurried discussion with Dikshit and her Cabinet colleagues and other Congress MLAs, speaker Yoganand Shastri came back to the House and announced expulsion of 24 BJP MLAs for three days amid vociferous opposition and sloganeering from them.

The day started with BJP MLAs questioning the Speaker's decision on Tuesday to allow the chief minister to give a statement on allegation in the CAG report regarding the Commonwealth Games.

"I was not involved in any decision making while the CM was part of the GoM that monitored the progress of Games-related projects. I have not been named in any of the probe reports," he told the House.

As the din continued, transport minister Arvinder Singh proposed removal of the opposition MLAs from the House, which was accepted by the Speaker.

Two Congress MLAs also moved a privilege motion against Malhotra for leading the ruckus in House saying that as far as rules of the Assembly were concerned, no MLA can shout slogans and bring banners and posters in the House.
