Speeding dumper runs over 5-yr-old

A five-year-old nursery student was killed and two others injured when a speeding dumper ran over them in outer Delhi's Aman Vihar area on early Friday morning.

"The incident occurred at 7.30am when Danish Husain, Mohammad Arshad, 14, and Niranjan Kumar, 12, who stay in Aman Vihar's C1 block, were walking to the RK Memorial School," said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

According to the police, the children were crossing the road when the dumper, which was running at breakneck speed, failed to manoeuvre around them and rammed into them from behind.

"We always made it a point to keep Danish as far away from traffic as possible, so he was walking on the extreme left side. Arshad was walking in the middle and I was on the right side. We were about to step on the road from the road divider when the truck hit us," said Kumar, who suffered minor bruises.

Such was the impact of the hit that Danish was sent flying head-first into an adjoining brick wall while Arshad lay writhing in pain. "Niranjan informed the locals, who then intimated us. We rushed the trio to the Brahmshakti Hospital where Danish was pronounced brought dead on arrival. Arshad has suffered a fracture in his right foot," DCP Sharma said.

Danish was the eldest son of Shabir Husain, a painter by profession who was in Mumbai when the incident happened.

Meanwhile, the errant dumper was waylaid and subsequently set ablaze by angry onlookers. The driver, identified as Brijesh Singh, was assaulted before being handed over to the police.

"Things got out of hand with incensed locals pelting stones at police officers and indulging in arson. We have detained 13 people, including seven women, and have stationed two platoons under the supervision of an ACP in the area," DCP Sharma added.
