“He is an economics graduate from DP Arya College in Panipat and claims to be proficient in micro economics. In fact, he earned a living by giving tuitions and doing odd-jobs in cyber cafes and in several BPOs,” said a senior police officer who questioned Mishra after his arrest yesterday.

On Thursday, Mishra was produced in court and is currently in police custody for three days.

Meanwhile, two separate teams have been formed to investigate several gaps in the case, as well as the involvement of two of Mishra’s associates in the incident.

“One team has been dispatched to Sultanpur to trace the arms dealer from whom the weapon was procured. The other team, accompanied by Mishra, will be recreating the whole incident tomorrow,” said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

He wanted to punish the 20-year-old victim who had refused to consider him as a potential match every time he contacted her since they were introduced in 2008.

“We have reason to believe that Mishra was introduced to the arms dealer in Sultanpur by two of his associates from the city. During questioning, two Delhi addresses have surfaced,” the officer said.

The gun salesman claimed Mishra had told him that any shot below the waist was safe and that the target was less likely to die due to loss of blood or injury to a vital organ.

“He wanted to shoot her in the leg instead of her spinal chord. But he misfired and shot her in the back. He had even tried to shoot himself. But the gun’s barrel got clogged and couldn’t eject the bullet,” said the officer.

“UP’s Azamgarh and Sultanpur districts are notorious for being home to several gun runners. They have their agents in many towns in the NCR who introduce them to manufacturers and dealers there,” said a senior police officer from the crime branch.

The victim, hospital authorities said, was out of danger but may be unable to walk for the rest of her life.
