Hindustan Times, on May 27, carried a story about the foreign nationals who were planning to go on a hunger strike because they were not being deported even after they had completed their sentences here.

An official of the detention centre confirmed the release.

The foreign nationals were supposed to be deported months ago, but were stuck at the Lampur Detention Centre. They then decided to go on an indefinite hunger strike. They were joined by six women foreign nationals who were also waiting deportation and were residing at Nari Niketan on Jail Road in West Delhi.

They all stopped taking their daily rations and even deposited their gas stoves.

“We have finally being released. After months of staying at the centre we are going back home to our families. It was because of our hunger strike that the officials took notice of our plight,” said Vincent Nwachukwu, a Nigerian who was arrested by Customs in 2002.
