A petition highlighting the advantages of the annual model, signed by 2,650 students, was submitted at the vice-chancellor’s office on Tuesday.

“The current system gives us time and space for in-depth learning. It also gives students from diverse backgrounds time to settle down and catch up,” said Ilna Afroze, a student at St Stephen’s College, who signed the petition.

Teachers opposing the semester system also reiterated that the system in its current form will not work.

“The infrastructure, and I don't mean just the classrooms, is not there. Institutional spending is not enough. About 1.5 lakh students are not the university’s guinea pigs," said Sanam Khanna, who teaches English at Kamla Nehru College.

The head of the English department, Sumanyu Satpathy, meanwhile, spoke to the university administration about the show cause notices sent to 11 teachers.

“The issue can be sorted out in the department. I have asked the university to refrain from taking any action against the teachers,” said Satpathy.
