Schoolchildren in the city are leaving no stone unturned in spreading the word about the need to protect the fragile environment.
Come Saturday, Shreya Popli, a Class-10 student at the Manav Sthali School in New Rajendra Nagar will immerse herself with gusto in Earth Hour celebrations.
“We will make presentations, participate in poster-making and quiz contests, stage a play, besides a slew of activities to mark the occasion,” said Popli. “We will also work on the school journal, Manav Youth Times, which is to be released soon. The journal would feature paintings, poems, write-ups, photos and lots of useful information about the environment,” she added.
The students of Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, are also gearing up for the big day. “I’ll be directing and acting in a play that will highlight this cause,” said Ayush Shivpuri, a Class-12 student.
“We are going to conduct an oath-taking ceremony, a just-a-minute session, a dedicated Earth Hour and decorate bulletin boards in association with the World Wide Fund (WWF) for nature as well as the department of environment and forests. Students of the DPS and the Ibtida Shiksha Kendra will participate in these activities,” said Sasmita Satpathy, who co-ordinates the activities of the school’s environment council.
“We are planning a special assembly with Earth Hour as its theme after the school reopens on March 28. The students will stage a skit on the water crisis. We are already following an energy audit or eco forum at our school. The class monitors ensure that the lights and fans are switched off before students leave classrooms. Nursery to Class 4 have one period everyday in the grounds in order to save electricity,” said Binata Mandal, a primary section teacher at Amity International, Vasundhara.

{{/usCountry}}Green Field School in Safdarjung Enclave has sent a circular to all the parents requesting them to create awareness about the WWF initiative for Earth Hour. The circular has already reached 1,500 parents. The school has, in turn, received 500 forms signed by them. The light of darkness
"I attended a WWF workshop for Earth Hour recently. The conservation of energy is already part of the school curriculum. Every year, we celebrate Earth Week by organising activities aimed at raising awareness about the environment. We have displayed posters made by our students and asked Residents’ Welfare Associations to do the same,” said Rittu Sehggal, coordinator of the school’s Eco Club.
