Scorching heat kept Delhiites indoors for the second consecutive day on Sunday. The maximum temperature in the city was 44 degrees Celsius, nearly three degrees above normal and the highest this season, while at Palam it was a record high of 45.7 degrees.

To make it worse, there were power cuts in large parts of the city, and water shortage in the VIP area of New Delhi.

Until now the highest temperature recorded this year had been 42.7 degrees Celsius on May 15.

"Though we had plans to watch Shrek 3or Chini Kumin the evening, we just did not feel like stepping out," said Malviya Nagar resident Nida Khan.

Monday, however, is expected to be better. “It has rained in Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. This will bring the temperature down. We are also expecting a dust storm,” said a Meteorological Department official. There is no chance of rain in the coming week. “The satellite maps suggest there will not be any rain soon,” said the duty officer in the Met Department.
