Everyone seems to be cashing in on our new Olympic heroes. This time, it’s wrestling champ Sushil Kumar who has earned the honour of being etched on canvas after bringing home the silver from the London Olympics.
As a tribute to the king of the ring, Delhi-based artist Anjolie Ela Menon has painted him in oil on mesonite, showing Kumar in an akhada with a co-wrestler.
The painting, that’ll soon be unveiled at Delhi’s Art Alive Gallery, has a price tag of Rs.15 lakh. “I started making the painting during the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Sushil Kumar is a self-made sportsperson. He’s true champ who has risen from a local village akhada to be a global star,” says Menon, who wants the painting to be kept in some sports academy or ministry.

The painting however, has already been garnering a lot of attention from art lovers, reveals Sunaina Anand of the gallery. "We’ve been getting queries about the painting since the CWG. Now, we have all the more reason for buyers pouring in," says Anand.
