Three persons, including a 48-year-old woman, were arrested for their alleged involvement in kidnapping a one-year-old with the intention of selling him to 'a needy couple', police said on Wednesday.
Sumita, a resident of northwest Delhi's Budh Vihar, and her neighbours, Praveen Gupta, 19, and Sumit Giri, 20, were arrested following investigations into a kidnapping complaint filed by the child's mother, Laxmi Rathore, on June 16, said BS Jaiswal, DCP (outer).
"Source-based information led us to Sumita, who was hiding the child at her house in Budh Vihar, and subsequently to Praveen Gupta too. Giri was arrested later from the Rithala metro station," DCP Jaiswal said.
According to police, the child had been kidnapped from a footpath near a CNG pump in Rohini sector 12 after Giri conducted a decisive recce of the area looking for an 'easy location'.
On June 16, police claimed, Giri and Gupta kidnapped the child and handed him over to Sumita.
Both Gupta and Giri work as contractual workers at a shoe-manufacturing unit in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri.
"Sumita successfully plotted the scheme and the team executed it. After she had the child in her custody, she began looking for needy parents who wouldn't mind paying for the child," said DCP Jaiswal.
However, police said, even as she was looking for a 'suitably desperate couple', the police were able to rescue the child from her clutches.
All three accused are high-school dropouts and this was their first criminal involvement.
In another incident, on Tuesday, eight minor girls had been rescued from placement agencies allegedly involved in human trafficking and four persons, including a woman, had been arrested. Ravinder Yadav, Pradeep Toppo, Vimal Kerketta and Babita, were residents of east Delhi's Shakarpur.
