The brother of Mukesh Singh — one of the six convicts in the December 16 gangrape case — cried out of shame and guilt, while watching the documentary -India’s Daughter by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin — on Tuesday.
Madhu Singh, brother of Mukesh and Ram, cried his heart out and apologized to the victim’s family.
“This was not the upbringing that we had. I feel sad that my brother thinks so poorly of women and their status,” he said.
Udwin, who had shown the first draft of the documentary to the victim’s family, said after the first screening the girl’s father got up and commended her. “Acha, bahut acha (Good, very good),” he said.
“It was a reminder of the night I first saw my daughter battling for life on that hospital bed. It makes me angry that even after three years these men have no remorse. I urge the government to mete out severe punishment to these people immediately that acts as a deterrent for such crimes in the future,” said the victim’s father, wiping his tears.
The filmmaker could not keep herself detached from the emotions of the families.
“In my career of 10 years I have never been so touched after a screening. I was proud that the movie will to some extend succeed in dispensing justice to many victims and their families,” said Udwin, a rape survivor herself.
On Tuesday evening even as the film was being screened for the families and a bunch of other guests the news of the FIR and the subsequent restraining order was received.
The news not only infuriated the director and her team, but also the family of the victim. “Not talking about such issues is not the solution. Many daughters, mothers and sisters go through such violence every day,” the father of the victim said.
