Nearly 25,000 plot hopefuls heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday as their three-decade-long wait came to an end with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) holding the draw under Rohini residential scheme, 1981, on the directions of the Delhi high court.

A total of 4,402 plots under the economically weaker section (EWS), 12,350 under lower income group (LIG) & 7,777 under the middle income group (MIG) categories were allotted on Tuesday evening. The plots, of dimensions ranging from 26-60 sq.mtrs, have been allotted in sector 32, 34 and 37 in Rohini, the DDA officials said.
"Allotment may take time because we need to verify the their credentials of the registrants afresh," said a DDA spokesperson.
The Rohini Residential Scheme was floated in 1981 and a total of 82,384 applicants had registered under various categories of plots.
However, the applicants have alleged that the DDA reduced the size of the plots under MIG and LIG category from 90 sq mts and 48 sq mts, respectively to 60 & 32 sq mts through an “unconstitutional” Public Notice dated November 1, 1999. “This is illegal," said Rahul Gupta, who led the campaign for the draw.
The DDA had had sought closure of the scheme in 2006, citing land scarcity.
