The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Tihar Jail Superintendent if jammers have been installed in the prison to prevent illegal use of mobile phones.

"Let an affidavit be filed by the Tihar Jail Superintendent on the issue," a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justice Sanjiv Khanna said.
The court's direction came after Delhi police told the court that jammers have been installed in all the jails in the Capital as per an earlier order.
The bench had taken suo moto cognisance of a letter written by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Kaveri Baweja in 2009 on the use of mobile phones inside Tihar Jail.
Tihar authorities had earlier assured the court that all cell phones of inmates would be confiscated after the bench had summoned the DG (Prison) seeking an explanation how the inmates were allowed to use phones inside the prison.
The bench had also expressed displeasure that despite installation of CCTV cameras and jammers in the jail, cell phones were being used by the inmates. The CMM had ordered an inquiry by senior officials of Delhi Police.
