A 21-year-old inmate at the central Tihar Jail in west Delhi allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself in the cell where he was lodged, police said.

"The incident took place inside the jail number 8 in the evening and the victim has been identified as Nabi Hussain. He was lodged in the prison for the past 18 months," said a senior Tihar Jail official who did not wish to be named.
Hussain is reported to be the son of a councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi from northeast Delhi.
He had been lodged at the jail after being convicted in a case involving theft, officials said.
"The other inmates lodged at the jail told us that Hussain used to claim that he had been falsely implicated in the case and did not belong in jail. Though he was unhappy from the beginning, he had been under severe depression lately," the police official said.
Police said they had registered a case and were investigating the matter.
"The victim's family suspects foul play in his death. We have registered a case," the official added.
