According to municipal authorities, donkeys not only lead to congestion in the walled city area but also give it an unpleasant look.

A survey will be carried out by the municipal corporation to ascertain the number of donkeys in the city and Sadar Paharganj (SP) zone this week.

“We want to beautify the entire area before the Games. There are more than 150 donkeys on Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg and they are used to transport construction material. We want to shift them outside the city to a sanctuary where they will be taken care of,” said Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of the city zone.

The civic agency had carried out a survey of a stable at Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg nearly four months ago to find out the number of owners of horses and donkeys.

“We now want to carry out a re-verification of these owners, apart from surveying other areas of the walled city. Once that is done, we will formulate a policy for shifting donkeys and horses,” said the official.

According to the civic agency, the stable situated at Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, which has more than 65 horses, near Ranji Singh flyover is not in sync with the modernised New Delhi Railway station and the newly constructed tallest building, the Civic Centre.

“Licensed tonga owners will be provided tehbazari but for the donkey owners we are yet to decide," said an official.
