Born: Nov 8, 1927 in Karachi

Education: Schooling at St Patrick’s in Karachi. Garduated in Law from Bombay University

1942: Joins Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)

1947: Becomes RSS organiser in Karachi city. After Partition, works for organisation in Rajasthan

1951: Joins Jana Sangh as state secretary of Rajasthan unit

1975: Becomes president of Jana Sangh

1977: With dissolution of Jana Sangh, Advani and his colleague Atal Bihari Vajpayee join Janata Party to fight the Lok Sabha elections. Advani becomes information and broadcasting minister in the Janata Party government

1979: Issue of dual membership rocks Janata Party as some members insist the erstwhile members of Jana Sangh dissociate themselves from the right-wing RSS. Advani quits govt

1980: Advani and erstwhile members of Jana Sangh form the Bharatiya Janata Party

1986: Becomes BJP president. Holds post again from 1993-98 and 2004-06

1990: Rath Yatra to demand Ram temple at the site of Babri Masjid projects him as a mass-based hardline leader

1991-93: Becomes leader of opposition; essays the role again from 2004-09

1995: Faces biggest challenge in political career, finding himself embroiled in hawala scandal. Vows not to contest elections till his name is cleared. Fights parliamentary polls (1998) from Gandhinagar after getting a clean chit from Delhi high court.

1998: Becomes home minister again

2002-04: Becomes deputy PM

2004: Vajpayee remains PM candidate but it is Advani’s show in Lok Sabha polls, which BJP loses

2005: Advani goes to Pakistan and declares its founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah as a secular leader, creates storm within Sangh Parivar. He refuses to clarify and is asked to quit

2006: Quits as BJP chief

2009: His stamp is all over BJP’s campaign for the Lok Sabha polls. Party tastes defeat again. Post-election, he is forced to give up the post of leader of opposition to Sushma Swaraj at the behest of the RSS

2010-13: Stature remains intact for the patriarch as NDA chairman and BJP parliamentary party head
